BacoInVeritas

Wine · Beer · Spirits · Cocktails

Point your camera at a bottle and find out what is actually in it.

BacoInVeritas reads the barcode off a bottle and matches it against a real product database. When there is no barcode to read, you photograph the label instead and the app identifies it from the image.

And when it cannot confirm what it is looking at, it tells you so — instead of inventing a tasting note and hoping you do not check.

How it works

Three paths, in the order the app tries them.

  1. 01

    The barcode

The scanner reads the EAN or UPC off the back label and looks it up in Open Food Facts, an open product database. A hit brings back the real name, brand, and — where it exists — the producer's own photograph.

  2. 02

    The label

Plenty of bottles have no usable barcode, and small producers are rarely in any database. Photograph the front label and the app reads it to identify the bottle.

  3. 03

    Neither

Some bottles simply are not in any record we can reach. The app says exactly that and offers to save what you scanned anyway, marked as unconfirmed.

Honest by design

Every bottle in the app carries where its information came from. There are three states, and the app never blurs them.

Samuel Adams Boston Lager

The barcode scanned cleanly but is not in the database. You will be asked to photograph the label instead.

Couldn't check

Unconfirmed bottle

The source did not answer — rate limit, no signal. That is not the same as "does not exist", so the app does not pretend it is.

source unreachable

Prices shown are estimates for orientation, never a quote. Star ratings come from people who used the app — the app does not invent one for a bottle nobody has rated.

What's inside

Your cellar

Everything you have tried, with your own tasting notes and rating.

A wishlist

The bottles you mean to try next, with links out to the retailers you already use.

A taste profile

Tell the app what you like — dry, oaky, hoppy, smoky — and recommendations are built from that.

Food pairings

Filtered against any allergies or dietary restrictions you have set.

Community reviews

Screened before they are published, with reporting and blocking built in.

English and Spanish

The whole app, not just the menus.

BacoInVeritas is not a shop. We do not sell alcohol and we do not ship it. Where a bottle can be bought, the app links out to retailers who do.

About

BacoInVeritas is built and operated by Ruvolo Enterprise Corp. The name is a nod to in vino veritas — in wine, truth — which is also the idea the app is built on: say what is actually known about a bottle, and say plainly when nothing is.
